Material Studies

This is a combination of three separate projects that were completed over the course of 9 weeks. Each project had specific goals and guidelines that helped in the creation of these materials. All of the materials were made by myself procedurally starting in Substance Designer.

Rendered in Unreal Engine 4

Tools: Substance Designer, Substance Painter, UE4

Created all aspects of the materials

September-November 2021

Project 1

These are the final renders, texture maps, and designer graphs for all three of my materials for my first project. This project was completed over a 2 week period. The goal of this project was to create materials that resembled a reference photo as closely as possible. The reference photo for each material can be seen on the first slide of each material gallery.

Project 2

These are the final renders and designer graphs for my six materials for project 2. This project was completed over a 3 week period. The objective of this project was to create textures and materials for manufactured objects. Each of the materials had two forms: one being a factory-new version of the material and the second being a well-worn version of the material.

Model sheets of the 'New' version and the 'Old' version of the materials.

All of the Substance Designer graphs used to create the materials for project 2.

Project 3

These are the final renders and designer graphs for my six materials for project 3. This project was also completed over a 3 week period. The objective of this project was to create textures and materials for organic materials. In this project I was studying the use of subsurface scattering and how it can enhance the quality of materials and objects. Each of the materials had two forms: one being a healthy version of the organic material and the second being a decayed version of the organic material. This project was by far the most challenging one for me. I struggled a lot with creating realistic looking materials for leaves more than anything else. I made about five different designer files and four different painter versions of almost all of the materials used in this project before I landed on ones that I liked.

Model sheets of the 'Healthy' version and the 'Decayed' version of the organic materials.

Each of these graphs have been changed slightly from there 'Healthy' version to create the base material for the 'Decayed' version.
